Jay Apt is a pilot and aircraft owner with over 5,000 hours of experience in 25 types of aircraft, sailplanes, and human-powered aircraft. He has flown single-engine aircraft to Greenland, Iceland, Europe, Alaska, and Central America. He almost always takes a camera with him when he flies.

Jay’s 1965 Beechcraft Model 18, a Twin Beech. The design first flew in 1937, and was produced through 1969 (photo by Chris St. Onge from her Staggerwing Beech).
An animation of the radial engine used in the Beech 18, and many of the great aircraft of the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s. The design provides even cooling and fuel distribution to the cylinders compared to in-line or V-designs, but creates high drag due to the large frontal area.
